Sharpening-How We Do It!

Ken has carved and taught through out the Southeast.  He is currently the president of the Southeastern Woodcarving Assn  in Montgomery, AL. and  has been teaching the realistic human face for 4 years, He often travels with Jeff Phares and assists Jeff with
his classes. Ken has also worked with the Troy University  Art Department as a guest lecturer  and  works with a local high School Art Department . He has been the featured artist for the Troy Art fest in Troy Alabama and continues to work with them .

You will learn how to setup and get started from a block  the  Anatomy of the face how to place and complete the features of the face using hand and mallet tools. You will start out with a band sawn blank with only the larger waste wood removed to help save time but will still have enough wood to make your own design or add things you would like .

Ken's class is set for the beginner / intermediate carver that wants to learn how to create the human face in a more realistic form. I usually don't get involved in advanced features such as wrinkles or expression but if there is a student that shows the skills to add that to there work I will go over it briefly usually one on one with that person or persons at some time during the class . Although I do a half round I do touch on how to set up for a full bust . My emphasis is building the face and its components , eyes, nose, mouth and such then we will cover hair and some design so that the carving has a pleasing shape .

Ken has been able to work some of the more advanced details of an art aspect in to the class by using the more advanced students project as a demonstration piece that has worked well so far as it doesn't put presser on the beginner to feel like its part of the class and they have to try and match it but it does give them the awareness of design .

Ken says: " I say Beginner what I mean is a person that has some knowledge of carvig. "

Check out Ken's website for more information and his gallery at: http://users.mon-cre.net/kdiver/index.html

Here are some of Ken's most recent carvings: (he does a great job, huh?)
