Sharpening-How We Do It!

We recommend that you take a class or find an experienced carver to carve with. PLEASE be careful and buy a carving glove for your non-carving hand. We all have to start somewhere and with some tools and materials. I started carving when I lived on an island in the South Pacific and didn't have anyone to advise me or could I find a good beginners' book. When I moved back to my beloved mountains and bought this business I still couldn't find a good beginners' book. I have had the good fortune to work with Larry Green in producing a good beginners' book: First Projects. You can purchase this book online at: Miscellaneous Books. It takes you through most things that I had to learn the hard way and has wonderful illustrations and step-by-step instructions. We decided to put together a beginners' kit that wasn't very expensive and contained enough to get you started. You will still need some gouges and other tools but at least you will be able to see if you like carving with this kit.

The Deluxe Kit contains the following:

. The "First Projects" book that I have talked about above.
. A pre-sharpened bench knife (a Murphy Knife with a 1 1/2"     blade).
. A leather strop to maintain the razor edge on the knife
. A container of strop abrasive
. Instructions on how to strop (hone) your knife
. One dog blank (basswood)
. One boot blank (basswood)
. Two 3-piece nativity scenes (basswood)
. #9 x 5/16" Gouge
. 5/32" V-tool
. Our latest catalog of carving supplies

All of this would cost you about $60.00 if bought separately.

The Basic Kit contains all of the above except it doesn't have the v-tool and the gouge.

Kevlar Gloves

KEVLAR GLOVE

You really need a glove. One trip to the emergency room will pay for a lot of gloves. You can purchase a Kevlar glove with this kit for a special price of only $5.00. Good protection at an economy price. Kevlar is the material used in bullet proof vests. We have sold these gloves for years and they do work. Will withstand most blows. Each glove has rubber dots for extra holding power. It is worn on the non-carving hand.  That is - the hand holding the carving.  Specify size - xsmall/small/medium/large.   We also recommend a thumb guard for the carving hand or the tape shown at bottom.
