Micro Motors are versatile bench top tools that have a DC motor housed within the handpiece. They are distinguished from flex shafts by higher speed performance and added flexibility. Micro motors have much less torque than flex shaft machines.  However, their higher speed results in a comparable rate of material removal with a lighter touch. The simple coil connection between the handpiece motor and control box allows for complete freedom of movement that cannot be achieved when using a flexible shaft machine.  Use mostly for detail work.
